Halacha Overview - The Service On The Day of Atonement

Note: It should be stressed that the statements in a summary must not be interpreted as halachic rulings no matter how definitively they are worded. When such rulings are needed a qualified rabbi must be consulted.

48. The Service on the Day of Atonement - Avodas Yom ha-Kippurim

On Yom Kippur, besides the daily and additional sacrifices the high priest brings a bull sin-offering (which is burned) and a ram burnt-offering; and the community brings two he-goats, one as a sin-offering (which is burned) and one as the scapegoat (which is pushed off a cliff in the desert). All of the sacrificial service on that day is performed by the high priest, who also offers incense in the holy of holies [as it says "Thus shall Aaron enter the holy place... and the priest who shall be anointed shall atone...]1; for those parts of the service that are unique to that day he wears special linen garments.a
